Marieke Meelen

Marieke Meelen is an Assistant Professor in Historical Linguistics at the University of Cambridge. She got her PhD from Leiden University, The Netherlands, working on Middle Welsh information structure & historical syntax. Her current research aims to answer questions on language variation and change, focusing on Celtic and Sino-Tibetan languages, combining theoretical, empirical as well as computational-linguistic (NLP) methods to create searchable annotated corpora.
She has done language documentation fieldwork on endangered languages in Nepal (Kaike & Dzardzongke, funded by the ELDP) and is currently also involved in UKRI-funded projects on 'The Emergence of Egophoricity in Tibetan & Newar' (with Nathan Hill, SOAS) and 'The history of subject pronouns' (with David Willis, Oxford). She teaches Historical Linguistics, History of English, as well as methods classes on creating annotated corpora and linguistics fieldwork (see Cambridge faculty website). In her free time, she volunteers for the Duke of Edinburgh's International Award and local Nepali charities like Samundra and she loves travelling to explore forests and climb mountains anywhere in the world.
